Your destination - Scottsdale

Sunny, scenic Scottsdale is one of Arizona's most popular winter resorts and a worldwide destination for seekers of luxury hotels, health spas, and outdoor recreation. Part of the Phoenix metro area, the city is located in the center of the state on the Arizona Canal. It is a major center of arts and crafts with more than 100 galleries and art shows. The city is noted for its Spanish and Western architecture, and its identity with famed architects Paolo Soleri and Frank Lloyd Wright, whose desert masterpiece Taliesin West is now a National Historic Landmark.

Scottsdale has been named the Number One Resort Community in America and A Fabulous Place to Retire. This is Sunscreen Country. Boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year, it offers a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities: hiking, biking, desert exploration and mountain climbing, boating on the area's beautiful lakes, horseback riding, cowboy cookouts, and world class golf on more than 170 courses. As a result, the city has attracted a population of more than 200,000. In addition to tourism, its economy is influenced by the presence of Motorola, military installations, and its Mayo Clinic facility. The city is served by the Municipal Airport and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Noted points of interest are the historic McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park; the Little Red Schoolhouse, home of the Scottsdale Historical Society; its Dude Ranches, Native American Festivals, Rodeos, and Arabian Horse Show. Cultural and entertainment attractions include the Scottsdale Center for the Arts; the Scottsdale Symphony; Orpheum Theater; Museum of Contemporary Art; Fleischer Museum of California and Russian Impressionism; the Arizona Science Center; and the Arizona Military Museum.

The Scottsdale area was occupied in the 9th century by the Hohokam Indians who built more than 200 miles of irrigation canals to water their crops. Many of those canals are still in use. The city was founded by U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott who purchased about 600 acres just outside of Phoenix. It acquired the name Scottsdale officially in 1897. Scott became a farmer and land developer and attracted new settlers to the area billed as Valley of the Sun. The city was not incorporated until 1951 when its population was only 2,000. Thanks to its warm climate and healthy environmental management, Scottsdale has grown rapidly in recent years. It was voted America's Most Livable City in 1993.
