Your destination - San Francisco

San Francisco: This beautiful city is set like a rare gem on the tip of a broad peninsula overlooking the entrance to San Francisco Bay. On the west is the Pacific Ocean, on the east the Bay, to the north Golden Gate, and to the south the mountains. It is a city of islands: Alcatraz, Angel, Farallon, Treasure, and

Yerba Buena, and a city of hills, of which the best known are fashionable Telegraph Hills, opulent Nob Hill, and the highest at 935 feet, Mount Davidson.

Its principal landmark is Golden Gate Bridge, linking SF to Marin County. Often called the most cosmopolitan American city, it blends the modern with the traditional in its sky scrapers and Victorian-style neighborhoods, rich in an ethnic diversity embracing Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Hispanic, African and Native Americans. The estimated multiracial population of San Francisco is more than 734,000. The population of metropolitan San Francisco is now more than 6,540,000 and includes the cities of Oakland and San Jose.

At the heart of downtown is the financial district, which has earned the city its reputation as a major center of finance and international trade. The port is one of the largest in the United States. The city is served by the San Francisco International Airport, sophisticated highways, major railroads, a modern rapid transit system, and the Bay Bridge, one of the world’s longest combination bridges.

Among the city’s cultural institutions are the Symphony, the Ballet, the Opera, and the American Conservatory Theater. Other key points of interest downtown are the Transamerica Pyramid Building, picturesque Chinatown, the Coit Memorial Tower on Telegraph Hill, the popular Fisherman’s Wharf, the Maritime National Historical Park, and the famous San Francisco cable cars. The many other attractions include the SF Giants professional baseball team and the SF Forty Niners professional football team.

The area was settled by Spanish explorers in 1776 on the site of a presidio established to guard the entrance to the Bay. A later settlement established under Mexican control in the 1830s at Yerba Buena Cove was captured by the U.S. and renamed in 1847. The city was transformed into a boom town during the 1849 gold rush and incorporated in 1850. Calamity struck in 1906 when an earthquake destroyed most of downtown and much of the surrounding residential area. But by 1915 the city was rebuilt and playing host to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Despite having to survive another damaging earthquake in 1989, this City by the Bay stands today as a revitalized center of commerce and culture.
