Mobile, Alabama is one of the nation's busiest ports, Mobile is located in southwestern Alabama on Mobile Bay between the bayous and the sandy white beaches of the Gulf Coast. The city is linked to the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway by a deepwater channel. It is a multicultural city rich in its French, Spanish, African, and Creole heritage, boasting a history of more than 300 years. Major points of interest are the Fort Conde Historic Museum and Welcome Center; Fort Gaines, site of the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay; Oakley, one of four historic mansions; the Romanesque Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception; Bellingrath Gardens; Dauphin Island Sea Lab; Cooper Riverside Park overlooking Mobile River; Battleship USS Alabama; Mobile Museum of Art; The Gulf Coast Exploreum Museum of Science; Wildlife Expeditions; and the 35-mile Azalea Trail. Mobile is the birthplace of the Mardi Gras in the New World and one of America's top 10 golf destinations, home to such championship venues as Magnolia Grove, Steelwood, and Azalea City Golf Club.

Mobile has one of the fastest growing economies in the region, and its Business Innovation Center is actively developing programs to attract new firms and expand business opportunities. It is ranked one of the top ten Entrepreneurial Hot Spots. Major industries include shipping, oil and gas production, computers, textiles, lumber, chemicals, shipbuilding, and aerospace. The area is served by the Mobile Regional Airport, five major railroads, 64 truck lines, and the Intracoastal Waterway. Mobile interconnects with every major port in the world.

Mobile is situated in an entrenched valley that can be dated back 15,000 years. In 1497 Amerigo Vespucci is supposed to have mapped Mobile Bay, and in 1560 the Spanish colonized the site and named it after the local Mobilian Indians. The town of Mobile was founded in 1702 by the French. About ten years later the settlement was moved to Choctaw Point at the head of Mobile River and made the capital of French Louisiana. Mobile transferred to British rule as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolutionary War. For a while it was a Spanish possession, then captured by the U.S. in the War of 1812. It was incorporated as a city in 1819.
